THE MANY USES OF CARPORTS
Carports aren’t just for cars. Of course, the main reason that most people purchase carports is to protect their car or other motor vehicle. But there are many other uses for carports as well, which is what makes them so versatile. Just as there are many types and styles of carports, there are also many ways that they can be used.
One of the most common uses for a carport is as a garage. This can be accomplished by either attaching a carport to a home or other structure or by leaving the carport unattached. Carports can protect a vehicle (or extra vehicles if you already have a garage) from the elements and are useful as extra garage storage. In fact, the word “carport” and “carport garage” are often used interchangeably, since this is their primary use.
Carports can also be used to house vehicles that wouldn’t fit in an ordinary garage. Because they can be customized to almost any size, height or width, they are the perfect solution to protect larger vehicles, such as recreational vehicles (RVs), big rig trucks or large machinery. Most of the carports selected for this type of use are metal carports or steel carports. These are the materials that are the strongest and sturdiest and can therefore withstand the larger sizes required for these larger vehicles. Even boats can be protected through the use of carports!
Another popular use is to cover vehicles or equipment that are used in different locations and that otherwise wouldn’t have a means of shelter or protection. This is primarily done through the use of portable carports. Portable carports are more lightweight structures that can be disassembled, transported and reassembled where needed. Many aluminum carports are portable because they are lighter weight and easier to transport.
Aside from the various uses of carports for protection and as shelter for different types of vehicles, carports can also be used for other purposes as well. Carports are a great solution for storing lawn equipment or other outdoor equipment and belongings. Some people utilize the garage ceiling storage space in a stationary garage and that may not work with a carport unless you have a sturdier model that can hold the weight of items stored on top, but they can still hold a great deal under the covering of the carport. And since carports can be ordered with any number of sides desired (1, 2, 3 or 4), you can close in your storage space as much as necessary or keep your carport open for easy access.
Carports can even be used to protect livestock or other animals, for hay storage, or for just about anything that needs covering outside. Another use for carports is to protect plants during colder months, similar to a greenhouse.
